Five Boho-Chic Tips by Jocelyne Sibuet

Interior designer & co-founder of Maisons et Hôtels Sibuet

“To decorate a beach house as a bohemian retreat, it’s important to create the right balance between atmosphere, colour and design. It’s subtle — a matter of eye and feeling,” explains Jocelyne Sibuet, co-founder of Maisons et Hôtels Sibuet and author of A French Country Home.

In her latest project — the Gyp Sea Beach Houses on the beach of St Jean in St Barth — Sibuet created a crossroads of atmospheres: folk elements, ethnic touches, contemporary design details, vintage pieces and materials with colonial references. “Being in St Barth, there is obviously a strong tropical theme. We favoured bold colours and worked with Nigerian and Tunisian craftsmen to create furniture, straw lamps and pieces in exotic woods. The furnishings show a colourful, layered personality.” Each home features bespoke furnishings enriched with fabrics from houses such as Pierre Frey, Manuel Canovas and Elitis."

Mix & Layer

"One of the keys to a bohemian interior is the art of combination. “I recommend researching the theme, origin and materials, then coordinating them according to your preferences — I love creating strong polarisation,” says Sibuet from Coco Mango, one of the Gyp Sea Beach Houses. “I favoured a fairly simple tropical style, with materials and that touch of craftsmanship that makes all the difference. Many of the lamps were made by Italian craftsmen specialising in bamboo. Others are more raw, depending on the spirit of the room.”

Bold Colours & Rich Patterns

"The boho-chic colour palette reflects a dual fusion: natural, organic and warm tones alongside vibrant patterns from ethnic and gypsy traditions. “In the Gyp Sea Beach Houses, the colours are in harmony with the surroundings: turquoise, fuchsia pink, strong yellows — all found in the landscape.” Rugs, tapestries, throws and cushions play a central role, alongside wood and straw elements that warm the atmosphere."

Handmade & Natural

"Boho-chic interiors often feature handmade objects — unique creations from artisans and artists around the world. “The soul of the interiors lies in the pieces and artworks we use,” says Sibuet, “like the magnificent beaded armchairs from Nigeria, or the tribal seats that add that defining touch of style.”

Objects That Tell a Story

"If there is one design style that tells a story, it is the bohemian. Reflecting a nomadic lifestyle, the boho-chic space is characterised by collections of objects gathered during travels, often steeped in memories. Art, books, sculptures, cushions and lamps all contribute to making a space inviting, warm and conversation-inspiring."

Lush Botanical Interiors

"Plants play a crucial role — whether hanging from the ceiling or displayed in elaborate ceramic pots. They bring the natural world indoors and are a key element of the bohemian aesthetic."
